HomeThread & Keep

A little understanding goes a long way

Thread & Keep is an independent reference journal about everyday fabrics and the things made from them. We cover clothing, household linen, care, storage and manageable repairs.

Our approach

We start with a specific question: what is this fabric, what does the label mean, or what should you inspect before trying a repair? We read relevant material from textile organizations, manufacturers, museums and public institutions, then explain the useful distinctions in plain language. Sources appear at the end of each article.

Our guides are researched explanations. We do not present them as laboratory comparisons, personal product trials or professional conservation services. A photograph illustrates the subject; it does not document a test performed by this publication.

Where general advice stops

Fiber content alone does not establish a safe cleaning process. The whole garment, including its trims, dyes, lining and current condition, matters. Follow the actual item label and product instructions. Historic, valuable or fragile textiles may need a qualified conservator; technical performance clothing may need manufacturer-specific repair.

Sources, dates and corrections

Publication and revision dates refer to our pages, not to a promise that every linked source was published recently. We revise guidance when we identify an error or receive better evidence. If you spot a factual problem, send the article title, the passage and a useful supporting source to [email protected].
